Definitely not a fan of the new look of Merida from Brave. The best thing about Merida is that she doesn't fit into that stereotypical mold of a Disney Princess. She's a damsel that can take care of her own distress. That's what was so appealing about her. The new look takes away everything that is unique and different about her. The funniest thing about this "makeover" is in the movie, this idea of what a princess should look like and act like was exactly what the character of Merida fought against. She could care less about being pretty or being a princess for that matter. All she wanted to do was be free to climb mountains and ride her horse. Merida would've ripped this dress clean off so that she could shoot her bow more effectively. If I was a woman, that would be the thing I'm most offended by, the fact that they took her bow and arrows and replaced it with a low cut bedazzled dress. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be pretty or viewed as sexy but it doesn't fit who she is as a character. Disney was trying to find a way to add to their princess stable (which is a cash cow btw) and they didn't understand that little girls want to Merida because of who she is and what she represents and that is a strong female figure. Disney didn't have to redesign her in order to make her a Disney Princess. She is a Disney Princess just not a conventional one. It's awesome to be different. If I have a daughter someday, I hope she wants to be like Merida (movie version) than any other Disney Princess.
